10 Phrases not in the Bible

So here’s a list of things many (myself included) think are phrases in the Bible…

  1. The lion will lie with the lamb“. Though we’ve seen many pictures, paintings, books, etc. with a lion and a lamb lying together as a picture of the millennial kingdom. This, however, is not in the Bible. Rather, what is biblical is Isaiah 11:6. (Augustine did have a sermon on where he erroneously said the lion represented Christ and the lamb represented the church.) The true Lion and Lamb passage is Revelation 5:5-6.
  2. God works in mysterious ways“…though God’s ways are not our ways, His ways are certainly not mysterious since he has given us special revelation (the Scriptures) to know Him and His ways. This may have started when William Cowper wrote a hymn with that title.
  3. Love the sinner hate the sin” – Mahatma Gandhi
  4. Repent of your sins” – the term repent of your sins is not in the Bible and contrary to the message of salvation by faith alone in Christ alone and not any works that we do. Repent for the forgiveness of sins, however, is (Acts 2:38)! The result of a change of mind and trusting in Christ is the forgiveness of sins!
  5. Ask Jesus in your heart” – Revelation 3:20 does not teach that by Jesus is knocking on the door of the sinners’ heart for him to open it up to be saved. Rather, it is telling the Laodicean believers that Jesus is knocking on the door of the church to come in and once again fellowship with them. Receiving Jesus is to believe in Jesus (John 1:12) not to ask Him in. When a person believes the Holy Spirit comes in to live in the believer (Eph 1:13-14).
  6. Die to self” – The believer needs not die to self, he already died with Christ (Gal 2:20, Gal 5:24, 1 Pet 2:24, 2 Cor 5:17, Col 3:3, Rom 6:2, Rom 6:6, Rom 6:8, 2 Tim 2:11, Eph 4:22-24, Col 2:20, Col 3:10). The only verse that says ‘I die daily’ is Paul speaking about his facing the danger of physical death daily.
  7. God won’t give you more than you can handle” – this is not biblical. This is a misquote of the verses that say God won’t allow us to be tempted beyond what we are able (1 Cor 10:13). God does give us more than we can handle but His grace is more than sufficient.
  8. When you die, God gains another angel” – Jesus gave his life for each and every person in order to be saved by faith in Him. No exceptions.
  9. Jesus condones sin – God forgives sinners on the basis of faith in Him but never condones sin, especially in the life of the believer. (Mat 9:10-13).
  10. The ‘sinners prayer‘. Nowhere in Scripture.

hard to believe the Lion and the Lamb don’t exist in the Bible in the way I always thought it did.
